Venous Thromboembolism: Epidemiology-physiopathology

The 30-50 % experience a pulmonary embolus in concordance, of whom 10% dies immediately in a few hours after symptoms occur. In the USA, PE causes more death than car accidents. The number was 43.536 at 1993. In the ensuing follow-up, iliofemoral venous thrombus propagate to post-thrombotic syndrome in about 50 % of cases. Patients with evidence of PE have 70% a DVT at their leg veins. Patients with DVT have 50 % silent PE. DVT and PE should be regarded a compaund medical entity.
