aGenel Cerrahi AD, bTravma ve Acil Cerrahi Servisi, İstanbul Üniversitesi İstanbul Tıp Fakültesi, İSTANBUL Venous thrombosis is seen most commonly in deep veins of the lower extremities. Venous thromboemboli (VTE) may cause serious morbidity and mortality through post thrombosis syndrome and pulmonary embolus. The signs and symptoms of VTE are caused by venous stasis, inflammation of the vessel wall and the surrounding tissue and pulmonary embolism. The incidence of VTE is 69-139 in 100.000. In hospitalized patients 250.000 lives are lost yearly worldwide due to this. VTE is a condition, which can be prevented by different prophylactic measures. Here we present risk factors, incidence and prophylactic measures in surgical and medical patients. We also present methods of prophylaxis in some special conditions. Additionally we present VTE evaluation forms and prophylactic measures used accordingly. Keywords: Prophylaxis, percentages, risk factors, special conditionsTurkiye Klinikleri J Gen Surg-Special Topics 2008, 1(1):29-38
