Vena Cava Filters
Dr. Murat AKSOYa
aGenel Cerrahi AD, Periferik Damar Cerrahisi Birimi, İstanbul Üniversitesi İstanbul Tıp Fakültesi, İSTANBUL Pulmonary emboli (PE) is a life-threatening condition with a sudden onset if the diagnosis is not clear and the treatment is not commenced on time. The standard treatment of venous thromboembolism (VTE), which is the combination of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and PE is anticoagulation. The use of filters is justified if anticoagulation can not be started because of any foreseen or unforeseen reasons. These include a contraindication to anticoagulation, complications of anticoagulation, PE despite adequate treatment and inability to carry out an adequate treatment. Although it is not recommended to use filters as a standard care in patients with major trauma and pelvic fractures, there is an increasing tendency among the clinics to do so. The filters can be permanent, temporary or retrievable. There are a variety of filters available on the market and all have similar problems. In summary, although there is a consensus over the use of cava filters in absolute indications, there remains an issue of debate on the retrievable filters without any sufficient scientific evidence. Keywords: Vena cava filters; deep vein thrombosis; pulmonary embolismTurkiye Klinikleri J Gen Surg-Special Topics 2008, 1(1):73-77
