Post-thrombotic Syndrome (pts)
Dr. Selçuk BAKTIROĞLUa
aGenel Cerrahi AD, İstanbul Üniversitesi İstanbul Tıp Fakültesi, İSTANBUL The post thrombotic syndrome is the most common complication of deep vein thrombosis. In patients who are known to have had DVT and with ipsilateral leg swelling, pain, heaviness and typical dermatologic changes (pigmentation, eczema, lipodermatosclerosis) and in most severe cases with ulcers, PTS is usually the correct diagnosis. Because of its high prevalance, chronicity and the severity of its clinical symptoms PTS is burdensome to patients and costly to society. With the use of effective thromboprophylaxis against DVT, especially recurrent DVT, PTS can be minimized. Elastic compression stockings worn after DVT can reduce the incidence and severity of PTS and recommended to be worn for 2 years. Keywords: Deep vein thrombosis, post-thrombotic syndrome, epidemiologyTurkiye Klinikleri J Gen Surg-Special Topics 2008, 1(1):78-82
