Pulmonary Embolism

aGöğüs Cerrahisi AD, İstanbul Üniversitesi Cerrahpaşa Tıp Fakültesi, İSTANBUL Pulmonary embolism is a frequently observed pathology which is very difficult to diagnose since its clinical symptoms as well as labaratory test results are non-specific. Pulmonary embolism is not a disease. It is frequently a complication of venous trombosis. By 90%, pulmonary embolism is caused by deep vein thrombosis in the lower extremity veins. It is reported that pulmonary embolism is responsible for 10% of all hospital deaths. While its mortality is around 30% when failed to be treated, mortality in treated cases falls to the level of 3-8%. In time, especially with developments in diagnosis and treatment, and long-term anticoagulation treatment, mortality and morbidity for pulmonary embolism has decreased. It should be kept in mind that the most important step in reducing the mortality, morbidity and cost of treatment for pulmonary embolism is prophylaxis. Keywords: Pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosisTurkiye Klinikleri J Gen Surg-Special Topics 2008, 1(1):83-90
