aGenel Cerrahi AD, Vasküler ve Endovasküler Cerrahi Birimi, Ankara Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ANKARA Superficial thrombophlebitis is a disease of superficial veins that it can be differentiated from deep vein thrombosis. It is a thrombotic process of superficial veins associated with inflammation of vein with or without infection. Even superficial thrombophlebitis has been considered clinically benign disease, it carries the risk of extension of thrombus into the deep veins and it can also cause pulmonary embolism. Superficial thrombophlebitis is usually associated with varicose veins. When there is superficial thrombophlebitis of an appearantly healthy ven, thrombophilia, a malign disease and another serious systemic disease should be investigated. Different therapeutic modalities from exercise to surgical interventions are performed for the treatment of superficial thrombophlebitis. Keywords: Thrombosis, venous thrombosis, phlebitis, thrombophlebitis, varicose veins, pulmonary embolism, heparinTurkiye Klinikleri J Gen Surg-Special Topics 2008, 1(1):91-96
