Mesenteric Venous Thrombosis
Dr. Cumhur ÖZCAN,a Dr. Erdal ANADOLa
aGenel Cerrahi AD, Ankara Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ANKARA Mesenteric venous thrombosis, although less common than arterial thrombosis, remains an important cause of mesenteric ischemia. The clinical presentation may vary from an asymptomatic condition to intestinal infarction and shock. Advances in imaging techniques have permitted the diagnosis of mesenteric venous thrombosis to be made before laparotomy is performed, but there is often a considerable delay in the diagnosis due to a low degree of suspicion on the part of clinicians and the unspecific clinical presentation. Early diagnosis and the immediate use of anticoagulation can improve the outcome. Most authors recommend conservative management for most MVT patients as well as surgery should be limited to patients with peritonitis or perforation. Keywords: Venous thrombosis, mesenteric veinsTurkiye Klinikleri J Gen Surg-Special Topics 2008, 1(1):102-106
